New York day 2

So we kind of got off to a slow start with someone sleeping in and not waking up, but we made the most of the day from 12pm onwards and also daylight saving. We had decided the night before to explore the financial district. It was not too far from where we were staying so we walked it.

However, we did make a short detour that I was not aware of. Essentially to visit the firehouse from Ghostbusters. Someone was very pleased with himself!

By this point I was hungry and decided we needed to eat. After a small search we stumbled on Tiny’s. The food that was coming out looked good and the reviews were matching so we went in. It was a good life choice. Just look!

20150611_135004Featured here is burrata with strawberries, heirloom tomatoes and basil. This. Just this. One of the tastiest things I have ever eaten. Also shown are the meatballs. Also good but didn’t compare to the burrata. Oh and my cucumber lime cocktail. That was also delicious!

20150611_140023For our main dish we had seared herb tuna with a caprese salad. Also good but that burrata was a tough act to follow!

Now we were all fed, it was time to continue the journey. So we headed to the world trade centre. Firstly we went to see the memorials for tower one and two. They were pretty awe-inspiring and a fitting tribute.

Next we went to the museum. To be honest, I wasn’t expecting a lot. I was expecting propeganda and a few artefacts. I was so wrong. It was jaw dropping, confronting, eye opening and a great tribute to the fallen and those who helped during and in the aftermath.

Seeing what happened on tv half way around the world, I could see that it was heartbreaking and a tragedy, but this museum opened my eyes to the sheer destruction that fell upon NY.

The museum also had a great section dedicated to the clean up and rebuilding of the world trade centre site, but no photos were allowed. Anyway, if you ever visit NY definitely go and see this.

From here, we walked over to the recently built new Tower 1. It is an impressive building.

We decided to go to the observatory even though George was really suffering from vertigo just by looking up at it. The view was magnificent.

DSC_0151It was a pity the windows weren’t super clear but yeh. The view from the 102nd floor was pretty good.

We figured we hadn’t done enough walking, so we proceeded down to Battery park and found a little bar serving craft beers. So we had a rest and watched the sun begin to set with a view to the statue of liberty.

20150611_192122It was here we discussed how we could live in this city, for a year or so. It is like if Melbourne and Sydney had a baby and put it on both growth hormones and steriods.

Still not done with the walking, as it was still quite light out, we walked over to Wall St to see the famous bull statue. I’m not going to include a photo because it was hard to get a good one and you should know what it looks like. We also walked past the stock exchange which is a nice loking old building.

It was then time to eat again. I had read about how Stone St was meant to be a great hub of food. It was. The cobblestone street was lined with gastro pubs. So we picked the highest rated one called The Growler. This food was so good. Like ridonk good. So good I’m going to have to try to replicate the Korean fries.

20150611_211201That is it on the right. On the left is chunky chilli con carne with home made potato chips and jalapeño corn bread. Also delicious, but damn those Korean fries! They weren’t even stodgy!

So that about wraps up day 2. Oh, I’m going to start putting in our step count. Today’s was 20,100!
