New York day 3
Our feet were still a little tired, so we decided to take an ‘easy’ day walking around the Rockafeller centre. Really, I just wanted to go to Nintendo World π Today was also our first subway experience and we didn’t get lost, so I’m chocking that up to a win.
So we walked around Rockafeller plaza trying to find it. On the way, we were overwhelmed by a lego shop and the NBC store. So much Seinfeld merch still! The only thing we really wanted to buy was the Stefon shirt but only large sizes were left. We did end upfinding Nintendo World, and I was a little dissapointed. I expected pretty much to do this
But alas, I walked out with a pair of triforce socks. It was definitely a fun place to go for a Nintendo fan, but I really did expect more. The Zelda timeline of merch was pretty cool though.
We spent the next 15mins deciding where to eat and on the way there I found the bakery where the base recipe of my red velvet comes from
We didn’t go in because of George’s ban on red velvet, but maybe I’ll get him to change his mind later in the trip. It will be interesting to compare!
So lunch ended up being a NY street food institution called The Halal Guys. There was a long line so we figured it was good. George was very happy with his chicken and gyro ‘sandwich’ that was a pira wrap. I had felafels over rice. The rice and salad were good, but the felafels were dry. Luckily garlic sauce was available. No photos because it was hard to eat and manage my phablet at the same time.
Whilst eating, we noticed that MOMA was just across the street and this was the one gallery I really wanted to visit. I love Van Gough’s Starry Night and Monet’s Water Lilly paintings and I knew these were there so in we went.
What I didn’t realise was that Warhol’s Soups were also on show there! Which made me sad because I bought my soup leggings but it was too hot to wear them and I had to wear a PokΓ©mon shirt to the Nintendo store (which recieved many comments, so I guess it worked out ok). Aaaaanyway…this had me even more excited! One of the special exhibits was dedicated to Yoko Ono’s work. And you can see some of these in the gallery below
- They had a video games as art section. So George and I played space invaders for a while.
- Minecraft was the only newer game featured.
- Apple. All I could think of was ”I would like a single plum, floating in perfume served in a man’s hat’
- All white chess set. There was a playable version available too.
- The first 4 of Warhol’s Soups. They were lined around a room.
I didn’t get any photos of the two Water Lillies on exhibition or Starry Night. I was too engrossed in the paintings themselves. Oh Mondrian and Picasso’s work too. Photos just don’t do any of these justice.
We walked around a little more and then caught the subway back to Chinatown so we could rest in our room and decide on dinner. I wanted Italian. So we headed to Little Italy. Pepe Rosso Social was the destination and it did not dissapoint.
- My pesto fussili with shrimp and sundried tomatoes.
- George’s spicy squid giant pene with airiabata.
- Our delicious wine as suggested by the waiter. It was called Il Doge. I laughed.
- Our desserts. Top was the Nutella Tiramisu and bottom was the hazelnut gelato.
Oh crap, I forgot that on the way home from our day out we picked up a 250g punnet of blueberries for $2! Australia why you no have cheap berries! We had been wanting to pick some up since we arrived but eh. They were out of raspberries so we will pick those up another day. But $2!
The step count today was 14,999. Anothee big day of exploring!
