So I finally saw Star Wars
Don’t worry, this post won’t have any spoilers. I love to troll but that is just cruel! I do, however, feel that I need to write about it. I’m sorry it was a day late but I was too overwhelmed last night to write anything coherent.
So. Did Disney and JJ Abrams deliver? Was the hype worth it? Should I have been as excited as I was pre-seeing it? The answer to all of those questions is yes. So much yes.
There is so much of the extended Star Wars universe that is given a nod to in episode VII as well as new material which I feel captures the magic of the original trilogy. This movie alone makes up for the prequel trilogy that shall never be mentioned again. Anyway, there are a few aspects of the episode VII that I will elaborate on, but nothing will be given away, I promise.
- Rey is a total bad ass. When I saw the trailers and posters I really didn’t know what her role in the film would be. Clearly she was going to be a main character, but the trailers gave nothing away and that is a good thing (I’m looking at you Batman vs Superman trailer…why wouldn’t you leave the fact that Doomsday is in it as a big reveal!). It is so great to see a strong female lead character that isn’t really over-sexualised in the slightest. I mean Leia in the original trilogy was also this so I guess they are just following tradition, but yeh Rey seems to be much more of a lead than Leia ever was. I’m excited to see her evolution as a character.
- BB-8 is adorable and a great successor to R2-D2. I always loved R2-D2 and was glad to see him back in episode 7. BB-8 I feel takes what Lucas was able to achieve with R2-D2 in a droid that is expressive and humanised to the next level. His design allows him to be so expressive, but he is also not annoying in the slightest. In fact he is the complete opposite. Besides R2-D2, he is simply the best sub-character in the Star Wars universe in my opinion. There is one scene where he is going down stairs ever so carefully as due to his design, stairs are really not his strong point. He was just in the background to Rey, but the motion and sounds were just simply perfect. I also have issues with stairs due to dodgy knees so I felt his plight. Anyway, I never thought I would get one of those Sphero BB-8 things, but yeh…I probably will now.
- That bar scene. I am just going to leave it there. I don’t want to spoil anything but there was one moment that both George and I’s inner child came out and almost shrieked with excitement!
- Harrison Ford has still got it at 73. Seriously, it was just like Han had aged a little over the years, he could still wise-crack like no other.
- I am so happy and relieved that there were no stupid characters that really didn’t have use to the plot. Also that there were no scenes with actors running through fields of flowers.
- I really, really want to go and see it again in the cinema, like now. Right now.
- The feels, oh god the feels!
So that is about it. I can’t say anything else, just go see it. It makes up for the heartbreak of the prequels and opens up the Star Wars universe in just the right way.
