It’s all about gratitude

I mentioned a while ago how I started writing down at the end of each day the 3 things that I was most grateful for. When I first started this exercise, I am not going to lie, it was a bit of a chore and really made me think about the little things and the good in situations. Which was very hard to do, especially because I have been in such a negative head space for so long.

But I stuck with it and soon enough it wasn’t as challenging as it was at first. I would have never thought something so small would make such a difference on my psyche, but it really has. I can’t recommend it enough. After about a month of doing it I now actually actively seek out the positives of any situation and really take notice of the little things. Because honestly, it’s the little things that really make a difference.

Before I started practicing this exercise I was in a pretty bad place. My mind always went to the negative and it was hard to be happy in any situation. I do suffer depression and high levels of stress so it is very easy for me to be in this state. But honestly, in a month of doing this I have noticed the difference in my mental and physical self, but more importantly people close to me have noticed a difference too.

It is really encouraging that small steps can make such a difference. I now look forward to the end of the day when I get to think back at all the wonderful little moments each day can bring and put pen to paper to preserve them. Of course I will still get angry, upset and sad at events throughout the day, it is not an overnight thing, but I do feel like my mindset has improved so much in a short period of time and I do honestly feel much happier than I have in a while.

If you are feeling down, stuck in a rut, hopeless and or worthless I really do recommend doing this. It really does shift your perspective from focusing on the negative to being more positive. I am going to keep doing this for the rest of my days I think. My ultimate goal is to be happy in all aspects of my life and this is certainly helping.
