Batman vs Superman my verdict
Sigh. Last night we went to see Batman vs Superman and I went in with low expectations. Turns out that wasn’t an unjustified thing. There might be spoilers in this post so stop reading now if you care. If you don’t carry on.
If you are a huge fan of the DC universe this movie will make you go like this at several points.
It was incredibly frustrating. Don’t get me wrong, there were some good points which I will list now to show that I am not biased:
- Wonder Woman
- Wonder Woman in battle specifically
- The Batmobile (particularly in the car chase scene)
- The Batcave
- The fighting scenes
- Batfleck. Now, I was super dubious about this casting going in, but he pulled it off. I have no issues with Batfleck
- The Cyborg scene
- The look of Aquaman
Now that is done, on to my rants. Rant 1, Lex Luthor. Again I was concerned about the casting of Jesse Eisenberg. He just wasn’t the Lex I was used to. He is a bad ass in his own right. A genius and someone incredibly calculated. I felt that some of this was portrayed and I have no issues in how Eisenberg acted, but the direction was odd. This Luthor was more mad scientist than cold, calculated genius. George made a very good point, had he been wearing a green suit with question marks on it, the direction would have been perfect. But he was no Luthor. Luthor covers his tracks so well you can’t pin things on him. This one failed at that. Yeh I’m just not sure how they are going to move forward with the character.
Rant 2. Dream sequences. WTF were these. Often they made no sense and seemed like they were there to show that all super heros have issues, which often they do and I mean Batman is the posterchild for that but what was that dream sequence with the guy in the mech suit (which was pointed out to me today is actually The Flash).
Rant 3. Doomsday and the final fight. Ugggh. This could have been such a good thing and it was ruined. I just can’t even. I mean some parts of this fight were epic, particularly when Wonder Woman became involved. I know why they did what they did and I can see what is could potentially happen for the Justice League movie but uggh. Superman should not have been able to fly holding that kryptonite spear. Just no. I mean moments before he passed out getting it out of a pool. Sigh. Also note they have killed off a potentially awesome villan. I’m just holding hope for Starro, Darkseid or Mongul. That would be bad arse.
Look I could rant forever, but I wont. But I will say that the introductions to the other Justice League characters were interesting and it was a good way to go about it. Even if the Flash and Aquaman scenes left more to be desired. I have just one question though, where is Green Lantern and Martian Manhunter? I know they are going with a newer version of the league, but come on.
Anyway, I’m sure you will go see it. Just don’t go in with high expectations.
