South Africa Day 7 – Imbabala Lodge Zimbabwe & Botswana
With a decent nights sleep being serenaded by the sweet music of wildlife, we woke up and sat down to a delicious breakfast. We were the only people at the lodge now so it was just the two of us.
As is was just the 2 of us for breakfast, we were able to request whatever we wanted! That was really cool 🙂
After breakfast, we were driven to the Botswana border where we waited for our tour group. There were forms to fill out but eventually we made it over the border and through to a very nice hotel where the Botswana boat and game drive set off from.
We started off our Botswana animal safari adventure with a boat trip down the Zambezi. It was interesting to be with a big group of other people, most of them Americans. They were constant forms of entertainment for us. One even asked the guide when they would see lions and tigers…yup…tigers. Also gorillas…we laughed so hard. They also couldn’t spot anything and didn’t shut up. But besides that we had a lovely boat trip! Our boat guide even drove in Namibia waters, so technically, we also visited Namibia :p
Along the boat ride, we saw many elephants, hippos and crocodiles. A super exciting thing almost happened. We thought we were about to see a croc eat an impala from the bank, he swam up and went under water…everyone on the boat was silent in anticipation of watching a live kill in the wild…then he fooled us. and popped up a few metres past the impala. Oh well, we came close to seeing it. There was also a few mongoose on the bank just as we left which was super cool to see!
Hippos out of the water! And a family 🙂
So this fresh water croc was pretty big and the Americans were all shitting themselves about it. I just had to wind them up and say that it was “pretty big for a freshy…but you should see the saltys that we have back in Australia, they also want to kill you”. The look on their faces were priceless.
We watched this hippo just eat for a bit. I love hippos. This guy was great.
We were able to see another herd of elephants crossing the Zambezi. This guy was the first one to make the move.
A baby made it! Such baby elephant butts!
Lunch was served at the really nice hotel that we embarked on our boat cruise from. It was a huge buffet full of all kind of things. We pretty much tried it all including having some crocodile. It was a little weird, because as we were eating we noticed a croc on the bank watching us whilst we eat his friend. Either way, we stuffed ourselves full of food and iced tea.
Such lunch! Also, I just loved this plate. I really wanted it 🙂 I have a huge thing for crockery.
It’s hard to see him, but he was totally there watching us eat!
The second part of our Botswana tour was a game drive, however, we weren’t expecting much as it was in the middle of the day when most animals just don’t do much. We actually did see some lions though, which completely shocked us! Also many elephants again (there are 70,000 in the area though) as well as many different types of antelopes.
So this giraffe was hilarious, he was just standing there, then bent down like this to eat. Apparently he felt really safe because they usually don’t do this. Or he was just putting on a show.
Our time in Botswana was now at an end, so we were driven back to the border in the game drive vehicle. That was a bumpy and windy ride when we were at full speed! Some more paperwork at the border, then back to the lodge.
We went on another game drive as soon as we were back with Richard our guide, and it was just the 2 of us on this drive. Given that it was just the two of us and he liked us, I had a very large Australian pour of wine on the game drive! It was really nice to just chat to Richard without others on the tour, we were able to ask so many questions. I think he appreciated that we just enjoyed being on drives and were fun to talk to.
My giant cup of wine for the drive 😀
Dinner was just the 2 of us and the lodge supervisor which was nice.
Considering how far we were from everything, the food was just so amazing. They had a huge garden out the back where vegetables and some fruit was growing. But yeh, so surprised for the quality of the food at the lodges. I do love food.
After dinner, we went on another game drive, because you really can’t have enough if you go on safari. Trust me on this one! On this drive we were able to spot some honey badgers. I couldn’t get a good photo of them, but they were super cool to see. They weren’t being crazy though. On our way back to the lodge, we encounters a huge pack of hyenas that came so close to the car and were super curious about us. I was about to snap a few pics, they are low light so excuse the quality.
Such a good doggo. He just wanted pats!
And that was our huge day! Technically the last day of our safari adventure before we head to Harare for a friend’s wedding. There will be one more early morning game drive tomorrow. George is still holding out hope to see a leopard. It is the only one of the big 5 that we haven’t seen yet. They are pretty rare to spot (get it…because spots…I”ll stop now…) but you never know what you will see on a game drive, which is what makes them so much fun!
